Writing Competition 2024 

Section 1: Prizes and Rewards

1A: Notifying Winners
The announcement of the Route2Write Writing Competition winners is scheduled for May 16, 2024, at 15:00 PST. One first-place winner, one second-place winner, and one third-place winner will be revealed for each Grade group (Grade 4/5, Grade 6/7, Grade 8/9).

Notification of victory will be conveyed to the winners via email, and they will have a window of 72 hours to accept their prize by responding to the email sent. If the prize is not accepted within the 72-hour window, it is considered forfeited. Furthermore, the names of the winners will be officially posted on the contest website on May 21, 2024.

1B: Verification of Identity

To claim their prizes, winners are required to provide verification of identity. Winners can provide verification of identify through the following formats:

  • Copy of Birth Certificate
  • Government Issued Identification
  • School Identification Card

Verification of identity must be submitted within 72 hours of notification of victory to accept the prize. Failure to do so will result in an automatic forfeit. 

1C: Reward Value And Format

First place winners will be awarded $200 CAD. Second place winners will be awarded $100 CAD. Third place winners will be awarded $50 CAD.

Winners can choose from the following formats to receive their prize:
  • Cheque by mail
  • E-Transfer

Section 2: Essay Submission Considerations

2A: Submissions Deadline

Participants are required to submit their essays through the designated submission page at www.route2write.com/writing-competition-2024 by the deadline of April 30, 2024 at 23:59 PST. Any submissions received after this time may be deemed ineligible for consideration. Paper submissions will not be accepted.

2B: Essay Eligibility 

For the essay to be eligible for consideration, it must meet the following standards: 

  • Each participant is limited to the submission of one essay only. Multiple entries will go unread
  • Essay must be submitted as a .doc or .pdf
  • Essays must be written using standard margins, 12-pt font, and double-spaced
  • Essays submitted by Grade 4/5 students must not exceed a word limit of 750 words
  • Essays submitted by Grade 6/7 students must not exceed a word limit of 1000 words
  • Essays submitted by Grade 8/9 students must not exceed a word limit of 1250 words
  • Essays must be submitted via the submission form on the contest webpage. Paper submissions will not be accepted
2C: Submission Caps
To ensure fair consideration for each submission, the following submission caps will be implemented:

  • Submissions for Grades 4/5 will be accepted until reaching a limit of 200 entries.
  • Submissions for Grades 6/7 will be accepted until reaching a limit of 200 entries.
  • Submissions for Grades 8/9 will be accepted until reaching a limit of 200 entries.

2D: NO CORRESPONDENCE

Following the submission of entries, there will be no further correspondence between participants and the organizers regarding the competition. This includes inquiries, modifications, or updates to submitted entries. Participants are advised to carefully review their entries before submission and ensure they comply with all contest rules and guidelines.

Section 3: Entry Requirements

All students that meet the following requirements can enter into the Route2Write Writing Competition:

  • All writers in grades 4-9 who are attending a school or being taught in a home-school environment in Canada
  • Participant must be 18 years of age or younger as of June 30, 2024
  • Participant must be residing in Canada

Section 4: Disqualification

4A: Plagiarism

By submitting an entry to the Route2Write Writing Competition, participants affirm that their submission is their original work and does not infringe upon the intellectual property rights of any other individual or entity. Plagiarism, in any form, will result in disqualification from the competition. Participants found to have plagiarized will forfeit any prizes awarded and may be subject to further actions at the discretion of the organizers. The organizers reserve the right to use plagiarism detection tools to verify the authenticity of submissions.

4B: Citations

Participants competing in the Grade 6/7 and Grade 8/9 categories are required to include citations for all referenced sources using MLA format in their essays. Failure to provide proper citations may result in disqualification from the competition.

While not mandatory, participants in the Grade 4/5 category are strongly encouraged to include citations for any sources referenced in their essays. 

4C: Use of Artificial Intelligence

Essays must not be composed or edited using Artificial Intelligence. All essays are subject to potential screening through an AI Detector for evaluation.

4D: Quebec Residents

Residents of Quebec, Canada are not eligible to participate in the Route2Write Writing Competition. This competition is void in Quebec and any entries received from residents of Quebec will be disqualified. 

Section 5: Winner Selection

All essays will undergo blind judging, ensuring impartiality and fairness in the evaluation process. The judging will be subjective, allowing for individual assessment of each entry's merit. Route2Write will initially select 10 frontrunners from the submissions, which will then be forwarded to the panel of judges. The judges will determine the top three essays in each category based on their assessment of creativity, originality, coherence, and adherence to the contest theme.

Section 6: Compliance with BC Laws

This competition is conducted in accordance with the laws of British Columbia, Canada. All aspects of the competition, including eligibility criteria, judging procedures, and prize distribution, will adhere to the applicable legal requirements of British Columbia. Any disputes arising from or related to the competition will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of British Columbia.

Section 7: Changes and Cancellation

Route2Write reserves the right to make changes to the competition rules, schedule, or any other aspect of the event as deemed necessary. In the event of cancellation or modification, participants will be promptly notified via the contest website or other communication channels provided. Route2Write holds no liability for any inconvenience or losses resulting from changes or cancellation of the competition.

Section 8: Intellectual Property Rights

By submitting an entry to the Route2Write Writing Competition, participants affirm that they retain full ownership of the intellectual property rights associated with their submissions. This means that participants continue to hold the copyrights and any other applicable rights to their entries.

The organizers of the contest do not claim ownership of the intellectual property rights of the entries. However, by participating, participants grant the organizers a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to use, reproduce, display, and distribute their entries for promotional and marketing purposes related to the Route2Write Writing Competition.

It is important to note that this license is solely for the purpose of promoting and showcasing the contest and its participants. The organizers will not use the entries for any commercial purposes without obtaining explicit consent from the respective participants.

Participants are encouraged to read and understand these terms before submitting their entries. If, for any reason, participants are uncomfortable with the outlined terms regarding the use of their intellectual property, they should refrain from entering the contest.

By submitting an entry, participants acknowledge and agree to these terms regarding intellectual property rights. The organizers respect and value the creative contributions of each participant and are committed to ensuring that the intellectual property rights of the participants are upheld and protected.
